The Chancellor of Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Italian people affected by the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

Dr. Jalil Koohpayehzadeh sent a message of sympathy to the advisors of the Cultural and Economic Section of the Italian Embassy in Tehran and noted that, “Iran and Italy are among the countries most affected by the Covid-19 outbreak and have consequently suffered immense human fatalities. Words cannot adequately capture the magnitude of our pain and loss; however, we wish to let you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during these trying times. We share this pain with you and stand together with the government and people of Italy in the battle against this global crisis.”

The Chancellor added that he is hopeful that everything will return to normal in the not so distant future.
Dr. Vincenzo Russo Spena (The Italian Cultural Advisor) responded to the Chancellor and stated that our countries and people are both severely affected by the virus, nonetheless, we will surely overcome this battle with the tireless efforts of our healthcare professionals, researchers and public health officials. He went on to express he is certain that we will recommence our collaborations in the near future.

Dr. Carmelo Ficarra (The Italian Economic Advisor) conveyed his deep appreciation and gratitude for the Chancellor’s kind wishes during these, especially challenging months. He noted that “It has been a couple of months since I have returned to Italy, but I have been following the events in Iran closely, and I am confident that Iran’s Healthcare System will be able to withstand this pandemic.” He also mentioned that, “Despite the quarantine that has been in place as of March 8 in Italy, many people in Italy have passed away. We are all in this together and hopefully, will successfully pass this critical point in history.”

This report is prepared by the Iran-Italy Scientific Cooperation Chamber at Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), which debuted its activities in April 2019 as the official center and hub for expanding collaborative academic endeavors between IUMS academicians and their counterparts at Italian Medical Universities.
