Iranian and Italian Clinicians, Specialists and Researchers Share Experiences and Lessons Learned from the Covid-19 Pandemic in Online Conference



On Wednesday, May 6, 2020 , Dr. Mehdi Moghtadaei, the Vice-Chancellor for International Affairs at Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) chaired the first online conference between clinicians from one of the largest university medical centers in Tehran (Rasoul Akram Hospital) and their counterparts from several prominent medical institutions and hospitals in Italy.
 
Dr. Moghtadaei began by introducing colleagues taking part in this online conference at the IUMS campus.
 
Dr. Moradi Moghaddam, intensivist at Rasoul Akram Hospital noted the strategies adopted by the hospital in managing patients on ventilators which had been successful in reducing mortality rates. Dr. Riahi, a pulmonologist and CEO of the hospital, indicated that they had been conducting stem cell research as one of the numerous approaches under investigation to battle Covid-19. Dr. Jalesi, an otorhinolaryngology specialist at IUMS mentioned the precautions that have been considered in deciding whether elective surgical procedures should be restarted post the Covid-19 outbreak. Dr. Talebi-Taher, an infectious disease specialist discussed the various medications, including hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir, remdesivir, and favipiravir which had been used for the treatment of patients affected by the virus; following which Dr. Karimian, clinical pharmacy specialist, enquired about any clinical trials taking place in Italian hospitals which were investigating other medications or vaccines against the virus.
 
Experts and specialists from prominent hospitals in Italy and the Local Health Authority of Reggio Emilia (IRCCS) also shared their valuable experiences pertaining to treatments being used and investigated, management of critical patients on ventilators, as well as national guidelines and approaches set in place to contain the disease since its outbreak.
 
The Italian physicians who joined this online meeting came from various specialties and hospitals: Dr. Giorgio Mazzi, Medical Director; Dr. Enrico Barchi, Deputy Director of Infectious Diseases; Dr. Nicola Cosimo Facciolongo, Chielf of Respiratory Diseases and Pulmonology; Dr. Giorgio Danelli , Chief of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation; Dr. Pierpaolo Salsi, Head of Resuscitation, Dr. Corrado Iaccarino, Neurosergery Hub spoke Parma Reggio Emilia, and Dr. Reza Ghadirpour Head of Neurosurgical Program Parma-Reggio Emilia.
 
Dr. Moghtadaei concluded reiterating the importance of following up on this conference through providing opportunities where faculty members from university hospitals in both countries will be able to share their research areas of interest and exchange contact information, allowing them to connect and collaborate with one other in the future. He also thanked Drs. Baradaran and Ghadirpour for arranging the meeting.
