Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) ranks first among Middle Eastern Universities

Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) ranks first among Middle Eastern Universities in terms of community impact in 2020

Dr. Moghtadaei, the University Vice-President for International Affairs announced that IUMS has advanced 100 steps in the most recent Time Higher Education World University Rankings compared to the previous year. He further noted that, "unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of certain programs encountered unforeseen challenges in 2020-2021, however, we were able to swiftly change course of action and compensate such that the University met its goals in terms of international student recruitment and admission, as well as international collaborations.”

He continued, "in the latest Times Ranking, IUMS has secured its place among the top 500 universities worldwide. With regards to impact on target community and achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), the University is currently ranked 55th globally, while holding the first place nationally and regionally for the past two consecutive years. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, which uses six objective indicators to rank universities from across the world, Iran University of Medical Sciences is ranked 400-500 in medicine, 200-300 in nursing and 300-400 in public health. In terms of communication with our counterparts at universities abroad, the University has held numerous joint webinars with Portugal, Italy, Belgium and Canada, focusing on the training of students in the health sciences and the exchange of faculty, researchers and clinicians post-COVID-19."

When considering online education at Iran University of Medical Sciences, the President of the International Campus stated that, “for virtual education in the International Campus, a separate platform was designed in LMS which is currently being used by our international students to facilitate long-distance access and support for participating in online classes and exams, as well as group projects and assignments. More than 250 international students enrolled in various degree programs this academic year and new disciplines were designed specifically at the International Campus.”

In closing, the VP pointed out that, “due to an increase in student applications from countries in the region, including India, Pakistan and Iraq, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education expedited the licensing of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and special permission was granted in December 2020 to admit our first cohort of Medical Students to this degree program. The University also admitted graduate students to the Masters and PhD programs in Biochemistry, Immunology, Nursing and Midwifery. IUMS also admitted 25 students to the Doctor of Dental Medicine, and 250 to the Doctor of Pharmacy. The establishment of The School of Pharmacy (3 years ago) and the School of Dentistry (in this academic year) in addition to the development of educational and research infrastructures is expected to further promote and advance the international ranking of Iran University of Medical Sciences next year.”
