Non-Communicable Diseases Research Group

Introduction:

Mortality rates from non-communicable diseases are increasing drastically, particularly in developing countries. Therefore, the World Health Organization has announced non-communicable diseases as the health priorities in developing countries since two decades ago. Currently, non-communicable diseases are the main reasons for morbidity and mortality in the world, forming noticeable causes of global burden of disease. Interestingly, burden of non-communicable diseases in developing countries with low/average income is much more than their burden in developed countries with high income. Human, social and economic ramifications of non-communicable diseases are evident in every country. However, low-income countries are more vulnerable to these adverse consequences. Thus, decreasing global burden of non-communicable diseases is an important priority and necessary for sustainable development. Non-communicable diseases are an important cause of mortality globally, yet three-quarters of these mortalities and most of premature deaths due to non-communicable diseases happen in countries with low/average income. Nevertheless, most of these mortalities are preventable. Our country, Iran is not an exception to this trend. Therefore, it is necessary to form a research group with focus on studying the prevalence, incidence and risk factors of non-communicable diseases as well as designing and presenting cost-effective interventions with the goal of prevention and control of these diseases.

Vision:

This research group is attempting to promote health and improve quality of life by means of health evaluation and identification of social factors affecting non-communicable diseases. Also we study cost-effective interventions for the prevention and control of these diseases and their risk factors with the goal of obtaining best achievements among all the regional research centers and groups.

Missions:
Designing epidemiologic studies divided for each disease to study incidence and prevalence of non-communicable diseases
Designing epidemiologic studies for incidence and prevalence of risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases
Designing and implementing interventional studies to prevent and control non-communicable diseases
Designing and implementing interventional studies to prevent and control risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases
Assimilating research resources and collaboration with other national and international organizations
Collaboration, cooperation, participation and support for research projects, plans and dissertations in regard to non-communicable diseases and their risk factors
Designing systematic review and valid meta-analysis studies concerning non-communicable diseases divided for each disease as well as their risk factors
Helping to form a council for national comprehensive control of non-communicable diseases divided for each disease
Designing and implementing interventional studies to promote health and empower society
Evaluation of indicators applicable to health system and its function dealing with non-communicable diseases
Research Areas:
Studying the main behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases such as smoking, unhealthy diet, alcohol consumption and low physical activity as well as metabolic/physiologic risk factors for these diseases such as high blood pressure, elevated plasma glucose level, high cholesterol, overweight/obesity
Studies for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in the order of following priority:     2.1. Cerebrovascular diseases
     2.2. Cardiovascular Diseases
     2.3. Accidents and unintentional injuries
     2.4. Mental problems
     2.5. Cancers
     2.6. Diabetes mellitus

     2.9. Gastrointestinal diseases
     2.10. Musculoskeletal disorders
       3. Studies about social factors affecting incidence of non-communicable diseases
       4. Studies about availability/accessibility of health services concerning prevention and
control of non-communicable diseases and their risk factors
